Welcome to International Cult Awareness Month

This is the first week of Cult awareness month. The aim here is to begin spreading awareness of the month’s topic with basic information regarding cults. These can be tools and tips on how to identify cults, how to know if you are in a cult, what is a cult, and what is the difference between a cult and a non-destructive group, are all religions cults, how many people does it take to make a cult and so forth. This week is focused on general information about cults and is not meant to focus on specific cults. The most important theme you’ll want to feature EACH week is if you’re in a cult, how to get out, and if you know someone in a cult, how to support them.

For this week, we focus on the most well-known cults, such as heavens gate, David Koresh’s cult, and Jonestown as well as other organizations that have a focus on religion, the occult, and the end times (doomsday or apocalypse). These cults are generally the first type of cult a person thinks of when they hear cult as it was the original types of cults studied in the early 1980s and 1990s. This type of abuse is growing exponentially today as churches branch off over time and create smaller groups that often turn into obedience and power/control cycles. This is a good place to outline pedophile rings hidden in religious institutions. Please note that this awareness month is not an attempt to take down churches, groups, or religious organizations but rather an attempt to bring awareness to the signs of these groups being a cult, how to leave if you need help, and how to support your friends that may be in a cult.

Over time, in the United States, new types of controlling organizations started popping up, under the radar. Groups with passion, led by a charismatic leader. For the remaining weeks, we begin to explore these new types of cults, starting with political cults. These cults are extremist views of politics or political ideology. An example of this is the Democratic Workers Party, founded in 1974 and dissolved in 1987. A more recent example of this is Qanon. This week should also focus on racist cults such as Klu-Klux-Klan. The focus is to deliver information about what these types of cults look like, how to know if one is involved in this type of cult, how to get out, and how to support your friend if they are in this type of cult.

During the 1960s and 70s, a new need began to arise in society, the need to repair self-esteem and to build success; Enter “Large Group Awareness Trainings”. This week focuses on businesses that pump people through training that require a person to purge their weaknesses in front of a manipulative audience such as a ‘coach’ or a ‘trainer’ and learn techniques to become more ‘successful.’ The techniques tend to be heavily dependent on exploiting weaknesses in the victim for the needs or greater good of the organization, not the person paying thousands of dollars for transformations. With the rise of feelings self-awareness and self-actualization came the rise of everyday gurus and mentors. People began to be exploited at the individual level in what is known as one-on-one cults, whereby a victim is being coerced and abused by one person, rather than in a group situation. This occurs in domestic violence situations as well, but little attention is paid to the “professional” mentor in a largely unregulated field of coaching, mentoring, and gurus. When focusing this week on this content, ensure to explain the signs of coercive relationships and groups that take a lot of money, attention, and time and behave in isolative predatory ways. Focus on interventions and ways to regain control and true freedom back in one’s life.

When widespread exposure of cults beyond religion occurred, more destructive systems emerged that required a detailed review. As it stands, there are destructive groups in almost any imaginable category ranging from yoga studios to online forums. These leaders have capitalized on victims in transitions in their lives who were promised desired changes or world-saving effects, and yet get trapped in trafficking or domestic violence, child abuse schemes, or more. Often, the cult leaders strip their victims of support, finances, and anything left to draw their victims away from their group and keep them there. But there is help available. There are outreach services and some domestic violence shelters that can help extricate a victim from the clutches of their captors. This is the last week of the awareness month, so let’s let the messaging feel hopeful and uplifting, and point to resources such as books, blogs, or agencies that can help.
