What ICAM is
International Cult Awareness Month (ICAM) is a global observance held every August, dedicated to educating the public about cults, coercive control, and the psychological manipulation tactics these groups rely on. Rather than treating cult involvement as a rare or fringe issue, ICAM is built around a simple premise: these dynamics are more common, and less obvious, than most people assume — and understanding the pattern is the first step toward preventing and recovering from it.
Founded by The Freedom Train Project
ICAM was established in 2022 by The Freedom Train Project Incorporated (FTP), a nonprofit organization that provides education and victim services to people affected by cults and coercive control. What began as a single organization’s initiative has grown into a shared observance recognized by communities, advocates, and survivors worldwide.
The Freedom Train Project
ICAM’s parent organization, providing year-round education and victim services for survivors of cults and coercive control.

Each August, FTP and partner organizations release webinars, workshops, informational sessions, and support groups aimed at increasing public awareness and understanding. This programming covers the psychological manipulation techniques cults and coercive groups use, the warning signs that a friend or family member may be affected, and the resources available for support and recovery. This site’s weekly content — psychological manipulation, isolation and control, financial exploitation, and family separation and betrayal — mirrors that same throughline in written form, alongside a full myths-and-facts reference grounded in current research.
Our goal
ICAM’s goal is to expose how cults and coercive groups actually operate — not the popular, easy-to-spot caricature, but the far more common reality of manipulation hiding behind ordinary relationships, communities, and businesses — and to equip individuals, families, and communities with the knowledge to recognize and respond to it. Just as importantly, ICAM exists to reach the people currently affected with a direct message: they are not alone, support is available, and recovery is possible.
